Enhancer experiment description: Our previous analysis of the STAT1 gene recognized a region downstream of the promoter and enhancer regions strongly repressing transcription of luciferase gene repor_x0002_ters (20). In the present study, we define an RE-1 element within this repressor region, to which REST bound and repressed transcription. In the absence of REST, transcriptional repression of the STAT1 gene was dramatically reduced.
